1 Yellow-eared Spiderhunter

A pair of Yellow-eared Spiderhunter with a somewhat strange behavior. Wonder what they were up to? This was recorded near the office of the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sepilok, Sabah, Malaysia.

2 Bornean Treepie

A fairly common sight at the Kinabalu Park area is this montane dweller and Bornean endemic. In fact I captured these videos at the Kinabalu Mt Lodge while having tea.

 3 Black and Yellow Broadbill

This is such a handsome looking bird. The distinctive white collar reminds me of a butler but the yellow tertiaries draped over the shoulder do hint of a conga dancer.

The Black and Yellow Broadbill also has a call to match its handsome looks - it lets off a loud buzzing trill and you can see their blue beaks vibrate as they call out.

4 Buff-necked Woodpecker

It certainly knew it was being watched and was a willing performer. That was good for me. Shot this female along the Kingfisher trail of Sepilok's Rainforest Discovery Center. It is one of the more common woodpeckers of the lowland forests of Borneo.

 5 Checker-throated Woodpecker

It was a nice and cool morning and just outside the Kinabalu Mountain Lodge. Another tree-climbing bird to add to the video list! Yay. What a pretty one, I must say. Chin Hock and I had just put down our coffee mug and walked out just 10 steps from the lodge and we found this handsome male out for breakfast.

 6 Black-crowned Pitta

With colors like that, it's no wonder Pittas are the birders' and photographers' prize catch. Add to that the shy nature and multiply its silent movements often in thick undergrowth, this is not an easy bird to find. One has to be quiet and very patient. The bird usually finds you rather than the other way round, as it was the case of this beautiful Bornean endemic.

 7 Brown-throated Sunbird

This sunbird is also known as the Plain-throated Sunbird. We shot this video just after a downpour and in the comfort of the Sepilok Jungle Resort's restaurant....

 8 Black-capped Babbler

Just after a nice session with the Black-crowned Pitta, this plucky Babbler got our attention as it strolled across our path. This babbler shares similar habits to the pitta but is said to not hop but walk. However, as the video shows, it does hop too. I suppose when one needs to avoid on-coming traffic, one has to do whatever it takes.

 9 Fiery Minivet

One of the few birds species that has females looking better, in my opinion than the male. I love minivets for their brilliant colors. The red and black hue of the male bird reminds me of my high school colors and was an immediate eye-catcher for us when we first started birding in Maxwell's Hills.

10 Buff-rumped Woodpecker

'Buff what?', you might ask but sorry this woodpecker pair was not parting the primaries to show off their rump. Not caught on camera but the buffy backs were there.

12 Crimson-breasted Flowerpecker

This little fella appeared right in front of my nose so suddenly, I wasn't prepared to capture it. Too close as well for the minimum focal length of the lens I was on. So forgive the really short snaps and shaky video. Will try to put up a better one if I see this guy again.

14 Copper-throated Sunbird

Finding a nest is always a bonus for any photographer as it was for this capture. I was brought to this nest by a very hardworking female. She was zooming back and forth to build this nest above a mangrove flow in Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve. I have got quite a lot of footage to share and will add to this after some more editing and sifting through the ton of material.

15 Collared Owlet

This one called out to be seen but it was tough spotting it. Good job Chin Hock was around to pick it out from the leaves and branches and also a bird wave running front, right and centre of the owlet. The quiet stretch of road leading up to the Kinabalu Mountain Lodge is a very productive area for birding. And that was where we caught up with this 360 degree 'head-turner'.

16 Banded Broadbill

I did not realise the Banded Broadbill was quite a common resident of Bukit Larut's lowland forest. They were calling out with vigor at a distance and I responded with a short playback. To my surprise the males came forward for a photo within seconds. The first 4 seconds of the video showing the female was recorded in Sepilok RDC but the rest was done in Bukit Larut.

17 Bornean Flowerpecker

Its unmistakably beautiful fiery breast attracts the eye easily to this pretty flowerpecker. We were entertained by a pair while having lunch at the Hallelujah Lodge near Kinabalu Park. Endemic to Borneo, it is a common dweller of the montane forests of the island.

19 Little Heron

This still counts as fishing right?  It was quite astonishing to find a bird fishing with bread crumbs. This extraordinary skill was demonstrated to my family and me...

20 Orange-breasted Trogon

The botanical gardens at the Japanese Village of Bukit Tinggi was a productive spot for me this Christmas 2013. Chin Hock and I were there in the thick of the Christmas Day afternoon crowd but the birds were not the least perturbed by the Yuletide noise.  This video is a nice christmas present for me - to see it again after some years of my first sighting in Panti Forest.

Merry Christmas everyone for WildImagery.

22 Bare-headed Laughingthrush

This is a weird bird. I read somewhere but I can't remember where that it's malay name is Burung Pontianak and I can see why - it does look devilish. The other weird thing about this bird is that like humans, the young has full feathers on its head but sheds it bald when it reaches maturity. Must be the stress of mountain living.

23 Silver Breasted Broadbill

It’s been ages since I met up with this remarkably handsome bird. The first encounter was many years ago in the montane forests of Bukit Larut. A nest above the road on my favourite bird route between the Hut Bungalow (Cendana) and Speedies (Rumah Rehat Gunung Hijau) was where I had the wonderful encounter.

24 Red-bearded Bee-eater

Sometimes it's good to take a break and just sit down to enjoy the surroundings when you are birding. That's what I did one afternoon at the Rainforest Discovery Centre at Sepilok.  I felt a little drained that day and was lumbering along the jungle path and decided to have a snack on a comfortable bench. After 2 bites of biscuit, I heard the familiar cackle of the Red-bearded Bee-eater.  The male sat on a branch no too far in front of me, but soon it flew over to a juvenile which was on a branch just behind me.  So I pulled out the camera to record this convenient encounter.

25 Ashy Drongo

A group of ashy drongos frequent the Kinabalu Mountain Lodge to the point of being a pest for me as I was looking for more species to video. However they were good entertainers, performing acrobatics as they took turns to snatch helpless moths and bugs that congregate the lodge's verandah.

26 Black and Red Broadbill

I'd call it the lipstick bird if it hadn't already got a name and you would agree why. If they were lined up with some Aussie beach-goer sporting neon sunscreen, who do you think would win in terms of conspicuousness? It's quite amazing to see a bird with a neon blue upper beak and bright yellow lower beak. Do forgive the manners of this winged beauty, I always seem to capture birds pooping.

27 Black-capped White-eye

Stop will you?!! This little fella surely tried my patience. It was within my arms reach but that made it even more challenging to focus and the dense foliage hiding the bird didn't help. Hope I can get a better shot next time.

28 Wallace's Hawk-eagle

As we were cruising up the Kinabatangan, we spotted this conspicuous clump of branches stacked rather untidily in the fork of a tree. We were delighted to find this pair nesting at the clump. We stayed quite a long while to look for good vantage points but alas the nest was really high up. Needless to say after ten minutes my neck was creaking under the stress of peering up at 80 degrees. But this pair of hawk-eagles were quite calm and generous with their poses, even exchanging places at the nest, as if taking turns for a photoshoot. We were however, looking for distinguishing signs at their feet to ensure this is indeed the Wallace's or was it an imposter.

30 Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker

I always like small and colorful appetisers. And was served with this tiny crayon-colored hors d'oeuvre before our dinner at the Forest Edge Resort. It kept me busy while Chin Hock decided on the dishes. But in the end he had asked me to order.

31 Laced Woodpecker

A lifer (new bird sighting) was presented to me today in Sungei Buloh but it was a tough shot.I came across a pair of them as I neared the obsevation hide near the educational centre in Sungei Buloh. They seemed startled as I was. One flew off and another stayed but soon fluttered away. I stayed back awhile thinking it was a nice quiet spot to wait for something to happen and it was worth the time. The male who flew away came back and foraged vigorously at the roots of a mangrove tree. Tucked under heavy foliage I could still recognise the bird but it was too thick for a decent shot.

32 Barred Eagle Owl

This is an amazing shot of the predator with the prey. Contributed by Yew Sum Tong. This shot was taken at 4pm and it looks like the Barred Eagle Owl has been feasting the whole morning and afternoon.

33 Oriental Pied Hornbill

I have vivid memories of this bird. During a school field trip to Kuala Atok Educational Centre, Taman Negara, my mates and I were screamed at by a flock of these noisy show-offs while we were doing our morning cleaning up by the river. With toothpaste foam in our mouths and sleep still on our faces, we were a little annoyed with the din coming from above us. Still, that morning was a lovely memory of my first encounter with the common hornbill and it had started me off on my birding adventure.

34 Rufous Piculet

Yes the word 'tiny' or 'cute' comes to mind when you see this miniscule woodpecker. Heard this common resident of the Sepilok Discovery Centre pecking on Heliconia leaf stems. Sorry it's another shaky video but it just makes me want to go hunt for a better video. Am just happy to have caught something on memory and playing it back is great pleasure. The later part of the video shows a pair on the tree 'holding hands'? Curious moment caught on camera. Maybe it was just one stepping on another's toes. Happens even in the animal kingdom not just at work or home.
