Actias maenas

Recorded in Kinabalu, Borneo contributed by BJ Lim, thanks.

Also known as the Malaysian Moon Moth - another collectors item, please do not purchase.

And oh, in case you are wondering. Yes, you can rent a heater for RM15 per 12 hours to get a warm night's sleep when temperatures drop at night in the Kinabalu Mountain Lodge. It seems the moth likes the idea of a cosy rest too.

Actias maenas

I finally meet the moon moth on 24 Aug 2018 at the Nest, Maxwell's Hill, Perak. We were blessed with two lovely males with slight coloration differences, both handsome and majestic. They stayed around for a few days around the same spot as with many large moths do, so we got to enjoy them night and day.

Research has shown that their long tails have bat sonar deflecting functions besides making moon moths look spectacular.

Recorded Width: 178mm, Height:172mm

The underside of the Actias maenas is no less interesting as their top and tails.

WILD NOTEs

Spider Monkey in Costa Rica

Latest capture by Chin Hock in Costa Rican rainforest. I wonder why this monkey needs a prehensile tail when it can swing without one.

Saltwater Crocs of Singapore

Two 2m plus crocs came out to play today (22Feb'14). Easy to spot them from the main bridge of Sungei Buloh.
